Opposite the Dent Blanche, in the authentic Val d'Hérens, a group of restored century-old mountain chalets embodies the rare encounter between rural heritage and contemporary architecture in Switzerland.
Here, deep in one of the wildest valleys in the Swiss Valais, at the foot of the Dent Blanche, in the heart of a small ski area (only three ski lifts, but actually very close to more popular areas), heritage conservation and contemporary architecture come together. Seven mayens (centuries-old farm buildings, two storage rooms, three barns, and two granaries) were saved from destruction by an idealistic and visionary architect who then brought them completely into the modern era. At Anako Lodge, every window and bay window becomes a living picture, while inside, wood is combined with very 1950s Formica tables, Louis XV velvet armchairs, and XXL flannel sofas.
