It was in Vals that Ruth Kramer and Thomas Schacht, a Swiss-Danish couple, first opened Brücke 49, a bed and breakfast housed in a 1902 building. Vals is not your typical mountain village. Here, there is no ostentatious luxury; discretion and serenity are the order of the day. People hike more than they ski, and they take care of themselves. Vals has also become a place of pilgrimage for architecture enthusiasts who visit the thermal baths designed by Peter Zumthor. Ruth and Thomas now offer travelers two options: guest rooms and three apartments in a neighboring house dating from 1775. Both options feature the same blend of traditional and contemporary décor, light, and a gentle way of life that exudes authenticity and kindness.
