“A Grande Dame in Sneakers.” That’s how Alexander Garbe likes to describe his first hotel (he also owns the Strandhotel Blankenese, which offers a more seaside-inspired take on Hamburg), nestled among the grand villas of Hamburg’s discreetly wealthy residents. Born in the 19th century, this Grande Dame has cultivated a style all her own—effortlessly elegant yet relaxed. Dressed in white on the street-facing side, she reveals a more coquettish character indoors, wrapped in shades of green and blue. The décor blends antique pieces with contemporary design. Many of the latter come from Stilwerk, the design destination that is Alexander’s other venture, founded by his family 30 years ago. Here, these pieces live a temporary life while awaiting, perhaps, adoption, as the hotel also serves as a showroom. Behind these stylish attributes, however, the gracious old lady has retained the marks of time: creaking floorboards, a wardrobe that trembles when a neighbour walks heavily overhead, and a door that lets laughter drift in from the staircase. And that is exactly as it should be. The Stilwerk Hotel Heimhude captures the rare atmosphere of the family-run guesthouses of another era. The reception desk shares space with the kitchen’s central island at the heart of the lobby, where guests can even boil their own egg in the morning. Breakfast unfolds with the quiet grace of a suspended moment, bathed in natural light—some tables tucked into the bay window overlooking the street. And for late-night thirsts, there is an honesty bar, with drinks to enjoy in the library or out in the garden.
