Madeleine
Chez
Marie Hamon & François Ash
In a pocket-sized kitchen, François Ash creates simple dishes that spark joy. Starters and desserts are prepared at the counter, while the plates make their way through the building’s shared corridor to the dining room. A true bistro atmosphere.
A stone’s throw from the Ill, in the lively Krutenau district, the restaurant has kept all the charm of the former winstub it now occupies: wood panelling, exposed timber framing and traditional bull’s-eye windows, all gently given a contemporary twist. Madeleine is the creation of Marie Hamon (front of house) and her partner François Ash (who previously worked at Le Richer and Le 52 in Paris), a Breton and an Alsatian who left Paris after Covid to settle in Strasbourg. Madeleine is also a nod to the street where this delightful bistro sits — and perhaps a wink to Proust. Who knows? Above all, though, it’s a place for honest, market-led cooking built around local, seasonal produce, served on traditional Obernai plates. The lunch menu is short and sweet (two choices each for starter, main and dessert), while dinner moves à la carte. As for wine, Madeleine sources some of its bottles from its well-known neighbour, wine merchant Jean Walch (26 quai des Bateliers), a passionate champion of natural wines. Madeleine is helping keep this neighbourhood’s food lovers happily in motion, alongside nearby favourites Foudre Feu, À Table and Bistrot des Rosiers.
