Fondation Marguerite and Aimé Maeght

Opened in 1964 by none other than André Malraux, the Fondation Maeght was the brainchild of two visionary art dealers whose ambition was to create a place conceived by artists, for artists. The first private foundation in Europe devoted to modern and contemporary art, it now houses one of the world's most important collections, with more than 13,000 works.

Until 15 November, the foundation is presenting a major exhibition dedicated to the American artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015). Until 8 November, photographer Peter Knapp—a close friend of André Courrèges and a privileged witness to the couturier's iconic 1965 haute couture collection—has been given carte blanche.

Fondation Carmignac

Did it all begin with the purchase of a first Gerhard Richter painting in 1993? Established in 2000 by Édouard Carmignac, the foundation combines a remarkable contemporary art collection of around 300 works with the prestigious Carmignac Photojournalism Award. Set on the idyllic island of Porquerolles, its villa and magnificent Mediterranean gardens are open to visitors until 1 November.

This season also features open-air film screenings and the delightfully immersive exhibition Sea, Pop & Sun, curated by Dieter Buchhart and Anna Karina Hofbauer.

Fondation Blachère

Jean-Paul Blachère's passion for contemporary African art was sparked in 2000, during a retrospective exhibition in Lille devoted to artists from across the continent. Already a committed patron of the arts and founder of Blachère Illumination, the world leader in festive lighting, he decided to devote his support to African artists. Established in 2003, the foundation moved in 2023 into the beautifully restored former Bonnieux railway station, where it now hosts artist residencies alongside solo and group exhibitions.

Until 19 September, discover Afroblue, a vibrant exhibition bringing together 36 artists around a single unifying theme: the colour blue.

Fondation CAB

Housed in a striking 1950s building in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Fondation CAB is the southern outpost of the Brussels-based institution created by Hubert Bonnet and dedicated to minimalist and conceptual art. Its intimate scale and carefully curated programme make it one of the Riviera's most rewarding contemporary art destinations.

Until 31 October, the foundation presents an engaging dialogue between American artists Nassos Daphnis (1914–2010) and Rita McBride. A second exhibition, organised in collaboration with Laffanour / Galerie Downtown, shines a light on the often radical work of French designer and architect Jean Prouvé.

Fondation Villa Datris

Dedicated to contemporary sculpture, Fondation Villa Datris was created by architects Danièle Marcovici and Tristan Fourtine, who first fell in love with this elegant late-19th-century mansion before transforming it into an art foundation. Its name, Datris, is formed from the first syllables of their first names.

Until 1 November, the exhibition Mediterranean: Contemporary Odysseys brings together more than 70 artists exploring their enduring dialogue with the Mediterranean—its myths, landscapes and cultural legacy.

Fondation Hartung-Bergman

This olive grove became their field of possibilities. It was here that Anna-Eva Bergman (1904–1989) and Hans Hartung (1909–1987) lived, worked and created, with their studios overlooking the Mediterranean landscape. Today, their former home is both a remarkably preserved artists' estate and an internationally recognised research centre devoted to their work.

Until 25 September, the exhibition The Voices of Their Works explores the many reactions their art has inspired over the decades—from critics, writers and curators—ranging from irreverent and humorous to reverential and ecstatic.

LUMA Arles

Few cultural institutions have generated as much debate as LUMA Arles. A founder with a bold vision, Maja Hoffmann, an architect renowned for pushing boundaries, Frank Gehry, and an uncompromising artistic programme—it was always going to take time to win people over. Five years after opening, the gamble appears to have paid off, with LUMA now standing as the perfect complement to the Rencontres d'Arles photography festival.

Among this season's highlights are Gerhard Richter's Overpainted Photographs, on view until 10 January 2027, alongside installations by Camille Henrot and Stan Douglas, among many other exhibitions.
