Les Pères Siffleurs

Chez
Philippe Polla

Let's face it, it's nice to get out of Paris's 9th, 10th, and 11th arrondissements to talk about a place that isn't new and that goes about its business without raising its voice or flaunting its impressive pedigree.

It's also refreshing to break away from the repetitive codes of bistronomy (same decor, same (non)colors, same materials) and find yourself in front of a bright red storefront facing a church, as if in a village square. It's a change of scenery. In an eclectic setting composed of objects gleaned from here and there (a Darth Vader figurine, an enamel Ricard plaque, art books, a small table inherited from a grandmother...), a delightful cuisine is served, masterfully prepared by a Japanese chef. Shunsuke Takano (formerly of Sola, ERH) interprets the French repertoire, adding a few subtle creative touches here and there. For regular customers, he offers a concentrated lunch menu (two starters, two main courses, two desserts) where everything is tempting. Today's menu: pumpkin soup or marinated salmon as a starter, sea bream or veal kidneys as a main course. In the evening, people come from further afield to sample a more elaborate menu: fried prawns and peppers, red tuna zuké, guinea fowl pie, seared octopus... The board lists a selection of mainly natural wines, equally tempting, chosen by owner Philippe Polli. In short, Les Pères Siffleurs is the kind of bistro we'd all like to find at the bottom of our street.
